WHAT IS PROJECT MOKRANJAC

Project Mokranjac is an all-encompassing attempt to preserve and nurture Serbian Orthodox church music.

The key task for the project is to fundamentally advance position of Serbian church music and improve access to it, through the process of its digitization, traditional and digital publishing, with reliance on modern technologies.

Serbian church music (church chant) is not only an indivisible factor of history and everyday liturgical practice in Serbian Orthodox Church, but also one of the essential elements of Serbian cultural and national identity. As such, the church music represents one of the highest ranking national cultural properties, comparable with the biggest accomplishments of Serbian Orthodox culture in other areas of religious art.

CHALLENGES

The most notable challenges in understanding and application of Serbian church music as a liturgical, cultural, artistic and historical treasure of the highest rank, include:

The largest part of this valuable cultural heritage was never published – even the works and manuscripts that are of key importance for history of Serbian church music, some more than a century old, often exist only as original autographs and manuscripts, or in old and inaccessible publications.

Difficult access to sheet music materials – although they represent public treasure and asset, materials are scattered across multitude of libraries and archives, many of which with restricted access. This makes it difficult for a broader audience to use the materials for research, publishing, and liturgical and concert performing.

Unsatisfactory conditions under which sheet music materials are often kept, bring into question the physical integrity and, sometimes, even mere survival of traditional printed materials.

Lack of professionally edited collections, anthologies and compendia of Serbian church music (from monophone plain chant to various choral settings) for liturgical and/or artistic usage.

Cultural importance of Serbian church music is not sufficiently recognized within domestic and wider Orthodox, as well as general international context – including Serbian Church itself, professional musicians, researchers and broader public.

SOLUTIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION

Using the technological capacities and human resources of Project Mokranjac, Serbian church sheet music (from the oldest preserved documents, to nowadays composers, arrangers and melographers) is being digitized, informationally (musicologically, culturally, historically and liturgically) contextualized, presented and published, both clasically and electronically.

DIGITAL ARCHIVE

One of the main practical goals of Project Mokranjac is to develop web site with digital archive.

Plan is to make digital archive publicly accessible, searchable and networked with all relevant digital repositories around the world.

Professionals and general public will be able to acquire the most important sacred works of Serbian composers and melographers, in an easy, quick and contemporary manner.

By doing this, we are broadening influence of Serbian culture and preserving national musical and spiritual heritage.

Uroš Lalicki (Belgrade, 1980). Architect.

Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade.

Focused on architectural and urban design, as well as history of urban development. His areas of special interest include: morphology of medieval cities within cultures of the Byzantine civilization, and architectural and urban heritage of the modern period in Panonnian Serbian lands. Also active as a graphic designer.

Founding member of the National Council for Serbian Language and Script. Editor, Coordinator and Designer of Everything for Serbian 2004 (project dedicated to development of software solutions for support of Serbian Cyrillic alphabet in various digital environments). Among initiators and leaders of 2002 – 2004 public campaign to enable Serbian Cyrillic localization of the Microsoft Windows operating system, which represented a turnaround and a model for future efforts in the area of language software localization.

Author and host of a TV show (18 episodes, 2005/2006) which explored architectural heritage of Belgrade, as well as the recent architectural production, exhibitions and publishing.

Involved in Serbian church music and choral singing from 2000.

Member of Saint Alexander Nevsky church choir in Belgrade since 2006. In addition to singing, he is also active in maintaining choir’s music library and preparing and editing thematic collections of sacred choral music for various church services and feasts. Also member of Study Choir of the Institute of Musicology at Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (choir directed by Dimitrije Stefanović, Academician).

In 2006 and 2007, attended summer schools of church music In Memory of Kornelije in Sremski Karlovci.

During 2012 and 2013, founded and conducted children’s choir at his parish church of Saint Archangel Gabriel in Batajnica, Belgrade. Since 2013, occasionally assists in conducting of church choir Saint Prophet David in Mali Mokri Lug, Belgrade.

Involved in researching, collecting and organizing Serbian church sheet music, and creating simple choral arrangements and harmonizations of plain chant (monophonic) liturgical hymns.

Technical editor graphic and musical notation designer for the book Serbian Christmas (editor Tamara Adamov Petijević), an anthology of Serbian choral music for the feast of Nativity (liturgical music for Christmas services and Serbian Christmas carols). In addition to selected works of Serbian composers, arrangers and melographers, the book includes reproductions of best examples of the Nativity scenes in Serbian church painting from 12th to 19th century.

Editor in Chief, graphic and musical notation designer of the All-Night Vigil anthology of liturgical music for mixed choir, published by Project Mokranjac in 2015.

Milorad Marinković, MA (Belgrade, 1976). Composer, docent at the Department for Music Theory and Pedagogy, Faculty of Philology and Arts, University of Kragujevac.

Earned Bachelor’s degree in composition and conducting at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade. His degree thesis - symphonic composition Heroic Overture - won Stevan Hristić award. Earned Master’s degree at the Department for Composition, Faculty of Music, Belgrade. Currently preparing doctorate thesis, under mentorship of Professor Academican Vlastimir Trajković.

Starting from 2000, teaches music at elementary, music and ballet schools, and finally at college level.

Since 1997 sings in church choirs and takes part in church life as a singer and choir director. Today, he is the conductor of the church choir Saint Prophet David in Mali Mokri Lug, Belgrade.

Composed significant number of spiritual musical works and choir arrangements for church services. His original works, written specifically for the occasion, premiered at Saint Simeon Academy 1999 and 2006. Winner of several notable awards for Composition, including Golden Tuning Fork, award by European Federation for Choral Music, for the work Holy God (Svjati Bože), and award 2014 Composer of the Year from Muzika Klasika magazine, for Nativity Kontakion, composed based on lyrics of ancient Byzantine hymn Today the Virgin (Djeva Dnes) from Saint Roman the Melodist.

Board Member in the Association of Serbian Composers and Chair of the Section of Classical Music Composers.

His activities in Project Mokranjac include composing, arranging, coordination, musical notation, and organization of certain activities – specifically those related to promotion of spiritual musical works of 20th and 21st centuries composers.

Lives in Belgrade.

MILICA ANDREJEVIĆ, MA

Milica Andrejević, MA (Doboj, 1976). Music Teacher at the “Rastko Nemanjić – Sveti Sava” Elementary School, Nova Pazova.

Graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Arts in Belgrade, majoring in Musicology (Thesis: Spiritual Music of Petar Konjović). Earned Master’s degree in Musicology from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (Thesis: Octoechos in everyday and holiday chant, based on example of Christmas service).

During college, sang in Study Choir of the Institute of Musicology and conducted Serbian Orthodox Church Choir Society of Pančevo (as assistant to Academician Dimitrije Stefanović), and then, from 1999 to 2012, was a choir conductor and chanter in St. Nicholas Church in Zemun, Belgrade.

As a post-graduate (2006 – 2007), earned a fellowship from the Serbian Ministry of Science and took part in project Traditional and New in Serbian Music, run by the Institute of Musicology of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

From 2006 to 2007, worked on the project Voiceless Choirs (Faculty of Music in Belgrade and the Historical Archives of Belgrade). In 2011 and 2012, authored and edited radio show Anthology of Serbian Music, aired at Radio Belgrade 3 (series of broadcasts focused on Serbian traditional church chant and choral music). Published articles on church music in the Anthology of Matica Srpska, the Notes of Matica Srpska, and the Theological Views. Contributor to Serbian Biographical Dictionary and Serbian Encyclopædia.

Author of the book Music and Words from the Legacy of Metropolitan Damascene of Zagreb (Belgrade – Zagreb, 2009) - a collection of Metropolitan’s sacred music choral works (arrangements and harmonizations of liturgical hymns for various services) and articles and studies on liturgical music, language and hymnography.

Since 1995, participates the summer schools of church music In Memory of Kornelije in Sremski Karlovci. Associate member of the project Collected Works of Kornelije Stanković.

As a member of Project Mokranjac team, primarily involved in music redaction and informational contextualization of sheet music, as well as in editing and (re-) arranging of existing monophonic and choral sheet music for various types of ensembles (harmonization of plain chant, transposition of single-gender choir arrangements to mixed choir settings and vice-versa, etc).

Lives in Zemun.

NATAŠA MARJANOVIĆ, МА

Nataša Marjanović (Novi Sad, 1984). Musicologist.

Earned degree in Musicology from the Faculty of Music at the University of Arts in Belgrade (thesis: Traces of Shakespearean letter in the works by Enriko Josif –Hamlet and The Death of Saint Stephen of Dečani). Doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade (thesis: Music in Serbian documentary prose of the second half of the 19th century).

Since 2010, works as an Associate in the Institute of Musicology of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

As a contributor to Matica Srpska, participates in lexicographical projects Serbian Biographical Dictionary and Serbian Encyclopædia, as well as the research projects Fundamental research of Serbian Music of the 18th and the 19th Century, and Music from Margins: Contribution to General and Musical Culture and Education.

Participated in domestic and international scientific conferences (Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Austria, Hungary) and published articles in scientific journals, anthologies and daily newspapers.

Since 2005 part of the project team preparing Collected Works of Kornelije Stanković. She works on copying and editing of Stanković’s manuscripts and harmonizations of Serbian tradtional church chant. She was also involved in research of composer’s mail correspondence, which provided her with special insight into his work in the field of Serbian church music.

Since 2011, participates in organization of summer schools of church music In Memory of Kornelije, that take place once a year in Sremski Karlovci.

She was a member of church choir Saint Stephen of Dečani in Novi Sad for many years. She also works with Study Choir of the Institute of Musicology.

Conducts the choir of Holy Trinity church in Zemun, Belgrade.

As a member of Project Mokranjac, she is involved in editing, digital processing of music notation, and creation of simple arrangements and harmonizations of plain chant church hymns.

Lives in Zemun with husband and daughter.

JELENA TONIĆ

Jelena Anastasija Tonić (Belgrade, 1969). Conductor of Saint Alexander Nevsky Church Choir in Belgrade.

Graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Arts in Belgrade, with degree in General Music Pedagogy (thesis: “Kola” - “Folk Dances” of Josif Marinković).

Sings in Saint Alexander Nevsky from 1993, and from 1997 directs the same choir. On the basis of monophonic (plain chant) scores from various Serbian church music melographers, arranged and harmonized numerous liturgical church hymns. The Saint Alexander Nevsky choir regularly sings at the Sunday and festal services (Holy Liturgies, Vespers and Vigils), and also performs in other appropriate occasions: festivities for anniversaries of churches and monasteries, spiritual academies and choral festivals. At the first choral festival Voice of Belgrade (April 23-25 2010), the choir won Award for the best mandatory performance of Vera Milanković’s Srbija. To celebrate ten-year anniversary of J. A. Tonić as the conductor, on February 16th 2008, the choir performed at a special concert, a combination of poetry reading and singing called An Evening of Poems and Songs in Cvijeta Zuzorić Pavilion in Belgrade. In May 2011, upon invitation of the Association of Serbs in Romania and Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Temišvar (Timisoara), the choir participated at the Choir Festival of the Diocese of Temišvar, to celebrate important anniversary – 175 years of Serbian Cathedral Church Choir in Temišvar.

Her interest and devotion for Serbian traditional church music was developed through singing in Study Choir of the Institute of Musicology of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and later through cooperation with Academician Dimitrije Stefanović and Prof. Dr Danica Patrović. These relationships helped her discover written sources for Serbian traditional church chant that were not represented in standard educational curriculum. She participated in summer and winter schools of church music for years – as a student and as a conductor (Jošanica Monastery 2000 and 2002, Trstenik 2000, Niš 2001, Prokuplje 2003, Hannover 2003).

From 2002 through 2011, she was Senior Assistant Teacher at the Music Academy of East Sarajevo, teaching courses History of Church Music and Analysis of Church Vocal Literature at the Department for Church Music. Having in mind that this is the first academic department in Balkans specifically focused on Serbian Orthodox Church Music, she also had an opportunity to take part in design of the academic curriculum. She edited accompanying text for the second compact disc of the Chamber Choir of the Department for Church Music and Chant at the Music Academy of East Sarajevo (Conductor Rade Radović).

As a member of Project Mokranjac team, she is primarily involved in music redaction and informational contextualization of sheet music, as well as in editing and (re-) arranging of existing monophonic and choral sheet music for various types of ensembles (harmonization of plain chant, transposition of single-gender choir arrangements to mixed choir settings and vice-versa, etc).

PRINTED EDITIONS

In addition to electronic publishing, Project Mokranjac is also involved in notating, editing and publishing of classically printed sheet music.

With the financial support of the Republic of Serbia (Ministry of Culture and Information, the Office for Cooperation with Churches and Religious Communities, and the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region), Project Mokranjac published sheet music collection “All-Night Vigil: Orthodox Choral Music in Liturgical Tradition of Serbian Church” in December 2015. This is the first book of the “Anthology of Serbian Orthodox Choral Music”, a multi-volume edition of liturgically organized choral church music, according to liturgical tradition of the Serbian Church.

The “All-Night Vigil” sheet music compendium includes liturgical scores written or arranged for mixed choir. Based on rich tradition of liturgical choral singing in the Serbian Church of the previous two centuries, the book is result of several years of editorial team’s effort in researching, collecting and editing Serbian church sheet music, but also practical experience in its liturgical use.
